Organisms in the soil, like worms, consume decaying plant material such as cardboard and mulch, returning its waste back into the soil. This waste is referred to as fertilizer. Never place worms in a composter because the heat will kill them. You can also add goat and rabbit manure into the compost. Chicken manure is really strong and must be used lightly or it will burn and kill your plants.
